Steven Martel, MA

My name is Steven Martel and I am currently working on my Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.)in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University, Seattle where I have focused on sexuality and multicultural issues.  I also hold a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University, Seattle as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Western Oregon University.

I have a wide breadth of clinical training and experience. My clinical filed placements have taken me to a local middle school, a private practice, and a private four-year university. From these, I have gained experience working with adolescents aged 10-16, male and female survivors of sexual abuse, as well as traditional college aged students.

My psychotherapeutic interests include anxiety, depression, trauma, and gender/sexuality issues including working with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. I am also interested in the identity/developmental issues pertaining to college students.

Therapeutically, I work from an integrative perspective with a strong foundation in Client-Centered Therapy (CCT), with support from Reality Therapy, existentialism, and Erickson’s Stage Theory. As a therapist, I believe ascribing to one theoretical orientation limits the potential growth of my clients. In using an integrative perspective I am able to identify and harness each of my client’s individual strengths and treat them using tailored interventions based on their presenting symptoms. Ultimately, this allows me to honor my clients by not forcing them into a prescribed role and thus allows us to utilize the therapeutic relationship to reach their full potential.

Melissa Byrd, MA

Melissa Byrd received her Masters in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University, Seattle in 2010.  She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.  In 2011, she became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor – Associate.

Ms. Byrd has had a broad scope of clinical experiences; she has worked with children and young adolescents in a school setting, chemically dependent teenagers and young adults, adult survivors of sexual abuse, and adults suffering from anxiety, depression, marital concerns, and other mental health difficulties in a private practice setting.

When working with clients, Ms. Byrd primarily utilizes the methods of Client-Centered Therapy and existentialism.  However, she does not believe that there is one way to work with clients, and prefers to work with the client to develop the best therapeutic approach to make the therapeutic interaction the most positive and successful possible.
